Hmmm... About Me. I started off talking about my how much I enjoy creating viz's, but then realized that it was probably obvious; so here's About Me.
I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. The farm has been in my family since the Oklahoma run in 1889. It mostly a wheat farm but we also grow some alfalfa and raise some cattle. Most people remember learning how to ride a horse and drive, but I don't because I have ridden horses since I was very small was driving a tractor when I was a little kid.
Growing up on a farm was pretty awesome. My siblings and I showed horses, fished in our ponds (dad had them stocked w/ catfish), built tree houses and played out in our BIG back yard. I learned some hard lessons as a kid too... like not naming the steers because they are not pets. (when I was young my dad would tell me that they "ran away"... when actually they were in the freezer.) One of my brothers taught me how to shoot guns. Even though I've since moved away, I try to go home very year to help out with harvest and to shoot some targets when I get the chance.
In college I studied American Sign Language and Education. I always wanted to learn a 2nd language and tried for years to pick up Spanish, but never could... finally tried ASL and learned it quickly. I was an interpreter for several years and, after finishing my degree, taught in an interpreter training program... but after 12 years I was ready for a change. I'd always liked technology and had been building my own computers for a few years, so decided to go into IT but wan't sure what area I wanted to focus on. I started in Network Administration, then was a Microsoft Certification instructor, and finally ended up in Business Intelligence (great fit!)
I've used several Business Intelligence tools; SSRS, Business Objects, Cognos, Crystal Reports, Excelsius, FastRadar (no ones heard of that one) but my favorite one by far is Tableau. I absolutely love the software. It's so simple to use, intuitive, and fun. I feel like I'm only limited by my own creativity... if I can envision a viz, I can probably create it in Tableau.
I decided to create this blog to show some of the cool stuff Tableau can do and also explain how it's done. I hope you all enjoy it. Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or comments.
